Valve: Major Counter-Strike: Source Patch Enters Beta

Earlier today, Valve released the beta for the upcoming patch to Counter-Strike: Source. Don't expect a major content patch though, the update is planned to add 144 new Steam Achievements (Does anyone care about these?), several minor non-game-changing features like a killcam, as well as a few other features that don't screw with the decade old Counter-Strike formula. In addition, the game is also getting major graphical update in the patch that takes into account changes in the Source Engine since 2004.

Here is the full list of features from Valve:

  • 144 achievements added (How in god's name do you give Counter-Strike 144 achievements?)
  • New lifetime player stats and summary screens (Do not want)
  • New match player stats and summary screens (This is actually a welcome feature in my opinion)
  • New end of round display with MVP and interesting fact about a player (Ok...)
  • Updated scoreboard with new icons, visual style, MVP stars, and avatar pictures (That seems kind of out of place in Counter-Strike, but if it's just progress, I guess it's Ok...)
  • New cinematic death camera (Really? I mean, really?)
  • New domination and revenge system (I hope you can disable this)
  • Added avatar icons to voice chat, scoreboard, and end of round display (This is Ok)
  • Incorporated many source engine updates (Not necessary, but welcome)

I really wish that Valve would just release Counter-Strike 2 already, rather than going back and patching the 6-year-old Counter-Strike: Source AGAIN. I mean, how long could that possibly take to develop? Or is the development of Team Fortress 2 hats and Episode 3 impeding their progress?
