GET OUT OF HERE, RANGER: Metro 2033 'Ranger Pack' DLC In The Works

So you played Metro 2033, became a master of the Metro tunnels, and didn't think it was hard enough, huh? Then 4A and THQ have just the thing you need.

Just announced , the Ranger Pack is going to be making the already hardcore action-survival shooter much, much hardcore-er. The pack plans to add an entirely new mode of play, as well as several new weapons, and 250 gamerscore (On Xbawks) for completing it.

The new mode removes the games scant HUD completely, makes all weapons both personal and hostile do more damage, reduces the amount of ammo/healthpacks in the game, and just makes the game harder in general. Honestly, this sounds like a day one download to me, I love hard games.

Check out the full announcement on Facebook.

Valve: Steam Comes To Mac, All Four Apple Gamers Rejoice

Remember the last time that Valve actually released something on time? Yeah, me neither. But it looks like they finally got their act together, since the Steam Client launched for Macs today. Sure, they might not be releasing any new content, but it's something, right? And now that they've gotten this out of the way, they can finally start working on Episode 3... Right?

For more information, head over to the new Mac section of Steam.

Valve: Portal Is Now Free For PC And Mac Until May 24th

You know everyone loves? Freeware. And do you know what else everyone loves? Portal. This is why it's perfect that Portal is going on sale for 100% off on Steam starting today, May 12th, and ending on May 24th. And the best part is, now that Steam has launched for Mac, you can play it on either OS.

But seriously, this was one of my favorite titles of 2007, and if you're one of the 5 people who don't own The Orange Box, I can't recommend it enough.

Also, did I mention that it's free?

Activision: Modern Warfare 2 sells 290,000 Copies On PC, Is Pirated 4 Million Times

According to Activision, as well as a recent article by Wired Online, Activision's Cash Cow, Modern Warfare 2 sold 290,000 legitimate copies on PC and was pirated 4.1 million times. First of all, I would just like to officially state that while GAME NEBULA DOES NOT ENDORSE ANY FORM OF MEDIA PIRACY, it's nice to see that Activision's milking of the Call of Duty franchise backfired on them.

I mean 4.1 million is a big number. Imagine a room full of every person who has visited this blog so far (about 1,000). Now imagine multiplying that room by 4,000. Now imagine if Call of Duty was good again. Wait, I got a little bit off topic there, but you get the picture.

Although I highly doubt that Activision will be able to turn the series around after Modern Warfare 2, it would be nice for them to learn from their mistakes, and give future Call of Duty developers more freedom in their projects (and dedicated servers. Sweet, sweet dedicated servers).

Anyway, suck it Activision.

Contender to the Throne: Google Tablet Is Coming, Will Probably Be Rad

This should be interesting. Earlier today, Verizon Chief Executive Lowell McAdam confirmed the Google Tablet after stating that the phone service carrier was "working with Google on a tablet computer". That's as close to an official announcement of an iPad killer as it gets, and as long as the thing has integrated Adobe Flash and Stereo speakers, you can sign me up for 15 units.

I wish Google good luck in their further endeavors, and I congratulate them for beating Apple at their own game earlier this week.

STOOPID: PC Exclusive Mega Man Online Confirmed by Capcom (No, Seriously)

Yeah...So earlier today, as reported by Gamespot, Capcom revealed that they're currently working on a PC exclusive Mega Man MMO. The game is currently under production by Korean Studio, Neowiz Games, best known for their development of "EA Sports FIFA Online".

Whatever this MMO is, I pray that it doesn't turn out as badly as we all expect it to. It might be bad, but I hope to god that it's not this bad.

Bro of the Month Club: Urdnot Wrex

So by now, most of us have played the first two acts of the Mass Effect Trilogy. By that standard, I think that a solid 99% of us recruited Wrex into our intergalactic crime fighting team, and for good reason. It's pretty damned hard to not like Wrex, and that's a fact.

If you killed Wrex in Mass Effect 1, you're a sadistic asshole, and I'm just going to get that out of the way first. Seriously, this guy is one of the smoothest, baddest, meanest, and ugliest characters ever imagined. He always gave the wisest, manliest advice, and when things got tough he kept a level head (unless his head was busy ramming mercenaries into walls). If you shot him, or let that god-wad bitch, Ashley shoot him, hang your head in shame.

The one time that Wrex lost his cool was when he realized that the protagonist was about to seal the fate of his entire species to extinction. AND EVEN THEN IT ONLY TAKES A FEW SENTENCES TO LOGICALLY CONVINCE HIM THAT IT'S FOR THE GREATER GOOD. See? Not just brawn, but brains too.

And finally, when you meet him again after two years, you find out that he went from being some old mercenary to THE FUCKING KING OF THE KROGAN. I'll tell you what. You name one person who has gone from zero to king of his god damned species in two years, and I'll revoke Wrex's bro status.

And there you have it: Urdnot Wrex, the official Game Nebula "Bro of the Month" for May

Vidya Clothing: Check Out These "boss" Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker T-Shirts

Have you ever wanted to wear a T-Shirt that says "BIG BOSS" in a size 560 font right in the middle of it? Of course you have, or else you're a complete pussy. Starting June 11th, American Metal Gear fans will be able to purchase (both online and IRL) a line of T-Shirts with references to everyone's favorite PS3 exclusive action-stealth title, courtesy of designer clothes manufacturer Uniqlo as well as Konami. Better yet, if you go to the midnight launch of these beautiful vestments at the Uniqlo store in New York City, motherfucking Hideo Kojima will be attending.

One interesting little tidbit about these shirts is that each one will come with a download code that lets you download your shirt design to the PSP title for maximum anti-ballistic protection.

Valve: Major Counter-Strike: Source Patch Enters Beta

Earlier today, Valve released the beta for the upcoming patch to Counter-Strike: Source. Don't expect a major content patch though, the update is planned to add 144 new Steam Achievements (Does anyone care about these?), several minor non-game-changing features like a killcam, as well as a few other features that don't screw with the decade old Counter-Strike formula. In addition, the game is also getting major graphical update in the patch that takes into account changes in the Source Engine since 2004.

Here is the full list of features from Valve:

  • 144 achievements added (How in god's name do you give Counter-Strike 144 achievements?)
  • New lifetime player stats and summary screens (Do not want)
  • New match player stats and summary screens (This is actually a welcome feature in my opinion)
  • New end of round display with MVP and interesting fact about a player (Ok...)
  • Updated scoreboard with new icons, visual style, MVP stars, and avatar pictures (That seems kind of out of place in Counter-Strike, but if it's just progress, I guess it's Ok...)
  • New cinematic death camera (Really? I mean, really?)
  • New domination and revenge system (I hope you can disable this)
  • Added avatar icons to voice chat, scoreboard, and end of round display (This is Ok)
  • Incorporated many source engine updates (Not necessary, but welcome)

I really wish that Valve would just release Counter-Strike 2 already, rather than going back and patching the 6-year-old Counter-Strike: Source AGAIN. I mean, how long could that possibly take to develop? Or is the development of Team Fortress 2 hats and Episode 3 impeding their progress?

Metro 2033 DLC Details Due This Week

So earlier today, THQ and 4A Games announced that they would be giving details later on this week about DLC for Metro 2033. The news came in the form of an official tweet, which revealed that "like a fine single malt, the DLC is almost done"..."we hope to be able to take the wraps off this week"

In previous tweets, 4A hinted that the DLC is "probably not what you expect", and confirmed that it wouldn't include single player narrative content or missing levels. My money is on a prologue mission.

On a related note, I recently read the novel of Metro 2033 in , and I recall a distinctive lack of DLC for the book. I think I'm going to submit a question to 4A about the lack of post-release paper support for the franchise.

Commentary: Nintendo, Rockstar, Bethesda, Bioware, and a man's journey through the history of Open World games

Editor's Note: While Bro Planet is mainly a (pretty awesome) gaming news blog, I also publish articles containing my own opinions, which are not to be confused with facts. Pointing out these opinions, and calling them opinions is hazardous to your intelligence, and is not recommended.

I remember a time when games were 2D, linear, and required you to jump on the heads of small, pixelated, and vaguely penis shaped monsters in order to win. Not too long ago, this is all there really was. Not that this type of game was even bad in it's day, trust me, the day that I got my NES I think I played about 80 hours of Super Mario Bros. in the first month that I had the console. But obviously, playing the same game over and over does get boring. Sure, you could try to file down your time on speedruns, but it was still the exact same game.

Not until 1986 was I blown away by the possibility of the open world genre. That year, my parents got me Metroid and The Legend of Zelda, and I fell in love with those games more than I think I have with any other Nintendo product to date. Not only were these my first games that I actually got to kill shit other than goombas, but they also showed me the re-playability, and artistic depth that Open World titles often contain. My elementary school friends and I spent hundreds of hours trying to find all of the hidden unlockables, and other goodies that these games contained.

Flash Forward 12 years. This was the year that I got Grand Theft Auto for the PS1. Being the pot smoking hippy that I was at the time, I didn't fully appreciate what the game truly did for the industry, and how it revolutionized open worlds outside of RPG's. The game gave you an expansive city that allowed you to do whatever the fuck you want without having to be specifically guided around. Want to drive around in a fire engine, and crash it into ambulances? No problem. Want to go on a killing spree in a stolen cop car? You got it. This game really changed the way that I thought of games forever (it also made me extremely sadistic in the ways that I regard violence). I really loved Ocarina of Time, but Grand Theft Auto 1 will always hold a special-er place in my heart.

That same year, I played Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall. Before Bethesda fanboys start moaning, I'm aware that this game came out 2 years prior to '98, but I didn't actually own a computer up until that point. When I got my glorious PC, I picked it up from my local Circuit City on the advice of my nerd-friends. And good grief, I was happy that I had those nerd friends after I realized what a great game Daggerfall was. I played as a lone ranger traveling the massive, procedurally generated continent of Tamriel alone, doing quests for those who were willing to pay. I felt like the ultimate badass when I played that game. Jesus Christ, I was a serious geek back then (but then again, I still am).

The next Open World game that changed my perceptions of what a game was capable of was Bioware's classic, Baldur's Gate, which I didn't get around to playing until 1999. Like Daggerfall before it, this game was an excellent open world RPG that gave you a lot of choice in how you wanted to play it. Unlike Daggerfall however, Baldur's Gate created a rich open world that had a seemingly endless supply of well written missions that weren't just "Kill 10 goblins, and return to me". The characters also resonated with me more than any book that I had read, or movie that I had seen. In fact, I still have a female-bro-crush on Imoen to this day.

Of course, then in the early 21st century, things really started to shift in favor of the open world. More and more games were released year after year. Morrowind & it's expansions, Baldur's Gate II, the 3D Grand Theft Auto games, and of course, Shenmue. All of these games really just took everything that had been established as good during the 90's, and made it better, and the high-quality 3D graphics allowed for games to break new boundaries that only served to make open world games better as a whole. On PC, since the internet had finally become fully mainstream, these game worlds could be expanded for free with the use of mods, and less freely with expansions. In addition, this generation of games brought a new level of continuity to the playing field, and made it so that your actions truly effected the world, rather than just occuring within them.

Later on in the decade, developers expanded the concept of the open world even more. Games like ArmA, STALKER, Crysis, and Mass Effect all made the concept of an open world viable in genres that are predominantly linear. Some of my fondest memories from 2007 involve me playing Mass Effect. The dialogue, the story, the characters, the universe. All of it was top notch. It's just a damned shame that Bioware ran out of money before they could make the gameplay live up to the writing.

And now, here we are in 2010. We've had home entertainment consoles for over 30 years, and every developer and it's mother has made at least one open world game. Open World games obviously have room to grow, and most likely will since are fairly popular among pretty much every kind of gamer (Even casual wiibros). With games like Red Dead: Redemption in the works, and hopefully many other Triple A open world titles, we have nothing left to do but wonder, and wait to see what the future will bring for the art of the Open World...

LOLVIRAL: Viral Assassin's Creed Website is what you would expect it to be like

So it appears that Ubisoft has opened up a domain intended to virally advertise their next title in the beloved Assassin's Creed franchise, "Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood". The previously mentioned site contains a bunch of fancy Flash animations mentioning something called "Abstergo Industries", as well as 7 items (there's one that you have to solve a puzzle to see) from the upcoming game , including this bad boy on the left. My current guesses as to Claw's use include: Gabe Newell's back-scratcher, one of those things that they use to get merchandise off of the high shelves, or a really poorly designed weapon of some sort.

Pokemans: The 2010 Pokemon Video Game Championships Detailed

While I don't actually play Pokemon myself (well, anymore at least) I'm fully aware that many of you guys still do. And I know for a fact that a lot of you take it really seriously. For those of you who do, you're going to have to travel to Hawaii if you want to show the world what you've got. This year's competition will include the current generation games, HeartGold and SoulSilver in the competition.

So here's how it's going to work if you're interested. In the qualifying tournaments, players from two different age divisions (born in 1998 or later, or 1997 and earlier) will be chosen on a first come, first serve basis from all of the attendees. The top 4 players from each age division from each qualifier will be invited to go to the finals in Kona Hawaii from August 13th-15th. There, the best the world has to offer in terms of Pokemon-Mastery will battle it out for the coveted Golden Pokeball... Actually, I have no idea what the prizes are, but for more information, you can visit the official site.

STOOPID: 17 year-old Playstation site hacker sentenced

Remember when the Sony Playstation website got hacked a few months ago? That sure was funny, wasn't it? But apparently, Sony remembers it too. A 17 year old Pennsylvania teen who is currently unnamed has been sentenced to 250 hours of community service and paying $5000 in damages to Sony after he was convicted of hacking Playstation.com. Why did he do it you ask? Apparently he was butthurt after being disqualified from a SOCOM Tournament (People still play SOCOM?) for cheating , and thought that hacking a multi-billion dollar corporation's website to get his revenge would be a good idea...yeah.

In fact, Sony was originally seeking $33,000 in damages from the teen, until the judge in charge of the case ruled it to be excessive. If you ask me, $33,000 isn't enough to teach this kid a lesson, but now maybe he'll think twice before HACKING A MULTI-BILLION DOLLAR CORPORATION'S WEBSITE WITHOUT A GOOD PROXY.

Study: 98 Percent of Australians Support an R18+ Rating

For those of you who don't know, many nations around the world have a tendency to censor games for various social or political reasons. Australia is one of these nations, and for years they have rejected all games that fail to reach the requirements of a "R16+" rating. This means that games like Gears of War and Fallout 3 have failed to make it into their country uncensored due to their government's fascist policies.
Recently however, there has been a lot of talk about the Aussie ratings board allowing an "R18+" rating, meaning that games would have a much better chance of making it through the censors into that great nation of Australia. Despite many politicians saying that the people don't want an R18+ rating, the Federal Home Affairs group of Australia has released a study saying that over 98% of Australian Citizens surveyed are in favor of the R18+ rating.
You also have to take into account that over 55,000 Australians gave input to the survey, meaning that the information most likely represents the general state of mind of most of the country. Many groups do oppose the rating, including the Australian Christian Lobby and the Australian Council on Children and the Media. In order for the rating to actually be introduced, Australian officials throughout the country must all agree, and no decision has yet been made.

Commentary: The Console Wars, Or Why We Should All Stop Hating And Get Along

Editor's Note: While Bro Planet is mainly a (pretty awesome) gaming news blog, I also publish articles containing my own opinions, which are not to be confused with facts. Pointing out these opinions, and calling them opinions is hazardous to your intelligence, and is not recommended.

I'm aware that many of my readers (especially the PC bros) already agree with what I have to say in terms of why the Console Wars are ridiculous. Most of the time when we talk trash on the internet about consoles, we're just being dickbags or trolls. But you have to remember that there are plenty of Sonybros who still have a deepseated hatred for Xbros, and vice versa. People have been bitching about NOGAEMZ and Halo for years, and it really has to stop. Sure, plenty of you will say that nobody talks about that kind of stuff anymore, but I'm sure that we all know at least a handful of friends, students, or co-workers who think that the PS3 has no good games, or that the Xbox only has brown shootan games with no depth. People just have to free their minds and get over themselves.

XBOX HAS RED RINGS OF DEATH

Oh, is it 2006 again? I didn't realize. Come on guys, if you think this, you clearly don't follow gaming news very closely.

PS3 HAS NO GAMES (not)

There, I wanted to get that one out of the way first. Before people start calling me a fanboy, I would like to point out that I own every console but the wii (and a $1300 gaming PC to boot). People tend to say that if the PS3 has any games, it's only recently that it's gotten them. This is just not true. The Playstation 3 had great titles from launch day, and although many of them were ports, there was one of my personal favorites included at launch, Resistance: The Fall of Man. Admittedly, the Playstation had a bit of a dryspell until it got Uncharted, but things only went uphill from there with Metal Gear Solid, Killzone 2, the duo of Ratchet and Clank games, Infamous, and of course God of War 3.

THE XBOX HAS UGLY GRAPHICS (not)

Once again, I can personally vouch for the integrity of the Xbox's ability to generate good looking games, even after 5 years. Although the Xbox 360 is technically inferior to the PS3, developers clearly have developed great systems that allow them to pull of graphical masterpieces on this platform on a regular basis. Gears of War 2 has some of the best textures I have ever seen in a game to this day, as well as top notch lighting and particle effects. Mass Effect 2 is one of the best looking PC games ever made, and it doesn't look much worse on Xbox. Despite what people say, Halo 3 and Halo Reach are both quite good looking games. It's not easy to render a good looking game with motion blur at 60 frames per second, and that's something that people tend to forget.

PSN IS BETTER THAN LIVE BECAUSE IT'S FREE (not, they're different, and good in their own respects)

There is definitely a trade-off in life between price and quality, even children know that. PSN may be free, but it certainly does have it's drawbacks. While PSN saves you $50 over Live, it tends to have a lot of server outages, and you have to pay for EVERYTHING that's not completely necessary to use it...and then there's PS Home. Xbox Live is a bit costly per year, but has a lot of really great features. Xbox Live Arcade has some really fun games, as well as an Indie section, and a retro classics arcade with some real oldies. Furthermore, Xbox Live tends to get more DLC support for it's games, which is a plus if you're into that kind of stuff....but then there are those god damned avatars....

So if you already agreed more or less with what I had to say, more power to you. People really have to get over themselves and admit that a computer is a computer. Sure, one might be a bit different then the other, but does that make one better or worse? It just makes them different. So remember guys, keep an open mind, and quit trolling the internet about this shit, it's annoying as hell.

Meta-Review: Alan Wake

Being the busy man that I am, I don't always have time to personally review every game that I play. Thankfully, plenty of other sites do, which means that I can post their scores/quotes to at least give my readers an accurate representation of a game's quality. I recently played Alan Wake, and after becoming stuck in a work-induced coma, I decided to create a meta-review for it...

  • The Escapist - "5/5 stars"
"Unless you're allergic to excellent storytelling or have an unnatural fear of pine trees, play this immediately."
  • Destructoid- "9.0/10 - Superb"
"It's a must-have Xbox 360 title that provides a freshness and dynamism that horror games have been achingly lacking for the past several years. And it's done all of this without an awkward, unwarranted, ill-fitting sex scene!"
  • IGN- "9.0/10"
"It's not the revolutionary product some may have hoped for, but it's still great entertainment. Remedy has built a world that, despite being a fantastical realm of twisting shadows and realities, is solidly anchored in authenticity."
  • Gamespot- "8.5/10"
"Fresh storytelling fleshes out the supernatural events in interesting ways"
  • Giant Bomb- "4/5 Stars"
"Alan Wake is on the whole a propulsive, thrilling, and downright spooky action game from start to finish, quite unlike anything else on the market in visual style and storytelling format."
  • Eurogamer- "7/10"
"Alan Wake is an accessible, undemanding game with a neat combat mechanic and decent visuals. It's just not a very original game, it's certainly not an exceptional one, and it's a shame it wasn't ready a few years ago."

  • Metacritic Average- "84/100"
  • Gamerankings Average- "85.91%"

PSA: Civilization 4 complete is on sale on Steam for only 10$

Damn! Sid Meier's Civilization IV complete is currently on sale on Steam for 75% off. If you don't already own this, I highly recommend that you get over to Steam ASAP and pick up this game before the sale ends. I don't know how many hours of my life I've poured into this game over the years, but god damn it, it clearly wasn't enough, since I'm going to re-install this right now (And if you haven't played it in a while, so should you).

Zuma now on sale for 75% off for Mother's Day (If that's your kind of thing)

Casual games aren't all bad, and PopCap Games knows this. I love Zuma, and so does practically everyone that I show it to. If you guys need a distraction from your STALKER or Oblivion, then I can't recommend this game enough. And for $5 it's a steal. Check it out at the PopCap games website or Steam (I think)

Desert Story: A Fallout Short Film

Check out this surprisingly well made Fallout tribute by Silvernite8. I haven't seen a fan film based on a video game this good since...well...ever.

Burning Crusade free with World of Warcraft at Best Buy

So if there's anyone out there among the 20 or so people who have yet to dive into the World of Warcraft, and would like to, Bestbuy is giving away the Burning Crusade free with Basic WoW. This is a great chance to get into the game if you're interested in learning the ropes before Cataclysm.
